You can reach unbelievable success in your studying and earn better grades mastering 'Learn How to Learn' skills!

Santosh Prem, a teacher at Malet Lambert School, claims that “the difference between a genius and a “normal” person is that the former “accidentally” acquired the critical combination of the appropriate environment, motivation and learning technique to excel in his particular field.” Literally it means that every student has the same potential to excel and succeed in studying without having any exceptional inborn gift.

One of the most vital components in this “genius formula”, which significance is underestimated both by teachers and students is acquiring and harnessing of ‘Learning How to Learn’ skill. “This is probably the one skill that was never explicitly mentioned in all the years that you’ve spent in school. But it’s the one where there’s the most reward for the smallest investment.”

Indeed, knowing how to learn is a universal skill which every learner can make good use of for self-education in future life. Learning how to learn is a critical starting point in studying, which promotes students’ success in the whole course of education. This drastic know-how forms not only the basis of successful learning, but develops a peculiar learning style of the person.

Some learners choose more methodical approach to learning and try to dive into the essence of processing data, breaking it into logical units in order to memorize large blocks of information in parts. Meanwhile, other approach to learning less structurally, relying heavily on loci memory improvement technique, which involves making associations between facts and visualizing things.

Thus, every learning style is unique and it is impossible to elaborate a set of standard learning strategies and methods which can be utilized by every learner. Hence, I offer you to get acquainted with the following learning techniques and experiment with some of them to see if they work for you.
Seven Principles of ‘Learning How to Learn’ Formula

    * Connect everything you learn to a specific goal. Remember that you can learn anything if you have a clear cut goal, which will motivate your advance in studying. Trying to learn something reluctantly or under compulsion, is always difficult and usually doesn’t bring any fruitful results. You should create a desire and speculate over the reasons of your learning very carefully. Bear in mind that learning more implies earning more; consequently everything you learn can be transformed into your career success.
* You will learn faster if you structure and logically organize all information in hand. It’ll increase the effectiveness of memorizing and help you immensely in your studying. You can break the data into small chunks or make a general outline of what you are learning.
* Single out the most important points of new material. Use a ‘highlight strategy’, which implies processing of information, underlining its major points and brief summarizing.
* Learn how to make drafts and set out in writing all your thoughts. The main idea of drafting is stating and organizing of key information meaningfully and coherently on a sheet of paper.
* Take regular breaks. Always combine work with rest. Try to make a change of scene and look aside. Have some food or turn to some physical training. If you don’t want to interrupt your work, but still feels that learning in the same surrounding is unbearable, try to accompany your studying with background music or make some visual images that involve moving, interaction or color.
* Learn to budget your time wisely, to accomplish all your work in time and make use of every minute of your studying. Distribute your work rationally and establish priority of each task in hand. Plan your time in accordance with quantity of work you have. Never yield a temptation to postpone tasks of secondary importance. Remember if you violate your deadline once there is a great likelihood that you’ll do it again.
* Learning works more efficiently if you are relaxed and your mind is calm. Concentrate your attention solely on studying during your learning periods. Have an organized working place to avoid any distractions and don’t forget to give yourself rewards when you have completed some tasks efficiently.

Take risks and don’t be afraid to experiment with different techniques. Always remember that those who learn and do it constantly over their lifetime do much better in their career and have more advantageous position than those who stop on attained results and rest on laurels.

How much can you afford paying for your knowledge? Learn whether the rates of return on money investment in education is worth the financial burden.

No issue is more disturbing and debatable for those concerned with college education than the issue of real value of college degrees. The tendency towards escalating cost of tuition fees made many people wonder whether a genuine payoff and opportunities college degree can offer to a graduator, in the long run, worth a high-priced investment.

This problem became especially acute for low-income parents, because the majority of them can’t afford to take an additional burden for paying such a fabulous sum of money for education of their kid. Annual tuition fees in different colleges range in average from $12,000 to $25,000.

Undoubtedly, such numbers provoke many people to think it over and weigh all arguments for and against college education.

Considerable rise of college charge caused a reappraisal of real value of higher education, in general, and college degree, in particular. A college degree, which can be interpreted as an official recognition for the successful completion of a vocational or an academic program, is now called into question. Many high-school graduators prefer well-paid employment to spending 4-6 years in college to earn a piece of paper which doesn’t even earn them squat back.

Though, money is not the only sticking point on a way to higher education, perspectives and vision of the future can’t be underestimated in the ultimate choice of a person, who foresees the necessity of obtaining college degree for success, regarding it as a necessary component of success formula in life; for prestige, considering a college degree to be a valuable and expensive contribution to his collection of achievements; or for money making, viewing it as an additional plus while getting fixed up in a job.

From my perspective, there are obverse and reverse of this issue. On the one hand, college degree is not a guarantee of anything, nor is it a factor of success in life. Timing and luck play a big part, as do personality, perseverance, confidence and native intelligence.

There are many people who succeeded in life without being college educated and having a certificate of their intelligence. History knows many that sort of examples, it is enough just to mention such celebrated minds as Ted Turner and Mark Twain, who weren’t tainted with the influence of college education. It proves that skills and inborn intelligence help much better in specific areas and often trump degrees.

On the other hand, a college graduator has a wider range of opportunities, can choose a high-paid job in his specific field easier than his counterpart – high-school leaver and also can expect to have higher income in future. “According to the Census Bureau, over an adult’s working life, high school graduates earn an average of $1.2 million; associate’s degree holders earn about $1.6 million; and bachelor’s degree holders earn about $2.1 million.” Overall, those with degrees tend to fare better than those who don’t have them.

So, I can only add that future college applicants and their parents have to speculate on this question very carefully, because a decision to enter a college and obtain baccalaureate degree are one of the most important choices a person has to face in life.

Remember that a real importance, a genuine price and benefits you can get from a college degree in long-term outlook can be defined only by you.

Get to know why a college degree is the best rewarding investment you can ever make.

“And once earned, a college degree is forever, as the payoff from higher education can never be erased, broken, or laid off.”

It was estimated by the US Census Bureau that a bachelor degree holder earns approximately $2.1 million over 40 years of his working life. The drastic truth is that a college graduator can expect to earn nearly a million dollar more than his school-educated counterpart. This sizeable stretch and notable disparity of the lifetime earnings raised demand, boosted popularity, and consolidated American firm faith in the value and significance of higher education.

According to the survey, conducted by the Chronicle of Higher Education, the American nation continues to have confidence in the value of a college degree, with more than the half of respondents saying “it is essential for success.”

The fact that the college education is rewarding economically both to the individuals and the entire country, is not a secret for anybody. The value of qualified and competent specialists is notable, and reflects as a weighty factor that has a great impact on the rapid economic growth of the country.

Benefits you can reap of higher education

However, how you can benefit from getting a college degree.

    * First, your college degree is your guarantee of financial independence, stability, and secure future, you can enjoy, having a steady profession, and being armed with a set of practical skills and sound knowledge.
* The world changes constantly, so no one knows what to expect tomorrow. Therefore, we should be ready for everything, having a solid ground under our feet. Higher education is your solid ground, which can provide you with confidence for the future, and the immunity from the economical drops.
* Higher education gives you an opportunity to master a profession with good job opportunities, and acquire skills, which are in demand. After all, a good education behind permits you to have a steady and gross income.
* A college degree gives you a great chance to be a master of your own life. An educated person has much more leeway and freedom of choice not only in the respect of career opportunities, but also in the sense of the moral and spiritual values.
* Higher education provides you with a possibility to be a free thinker, to see obvious in the hidden implication, to analyze, to generalize, and to make conclusions. In a word, it uncovers you the essence of your being, and helps you to increase the understanding of the surrounding world.
* You can accomplish the most cherished and precious dreams of yours, for instance, to become a pilot, to have a gorgeous house on the seaside, to have a chic expensive car. Education makes your dreams come true.
* Higher education expands your knowledge base, sharpens your critical thinking, and consolidates your confidence.
* “Your college experience can be both life affirming and career enhancing. The classroom and the coursework expose you to diverse people and ideas.”

Education gives you something that can’t be measured in terms of money that you can earn. A degree of power, freedom, and independence you possess being educated, can’t be placed on the same footing as material benefits you can enjoy. Bear in mind that you can’t buy it for any price, but can easily get with higher education.

Overall, it is practically impossible to enumerate a myriad of opportunities you can get with a college degree in hands and acquired knowledge in brain. Though, you should remember that the world higher education opens before you is boundless and versatile.

Don't turn your homework into a fatal disaster, take it easier and get to know a great way how to treat the work which you hate doing.

Homework, S-W-E-E-T homework! B-r-r-r-r! This word makes me feverish:

How many times you’ve been telling yourself different excuses to skip your homework or postpone it to the latest deadline? Was there really something important that made you put your homework aside, or you were just making these excuses for yourself and others?

You probably won’t be surprised if I tell you that you hate your homework, because:

    * It takes your time that you could spend with friends;
* It requires your concentrated attention and perseverance – not everyone can stand that!
* You have a chance to earn some extra cash, but your homework doesn’t leave time for that;
* There is not guarantee that you get a top grade even if you spend a lot of time and efforts on you homework;
* You are not sure if this homework will ever help in you future job.

If you find your homework boring, useless and annoying and believe that it is just a waste of time – EAT A FROG! That’s my advice. This is how I treat the work I hate, if I need to do regardless my likes and dislikes.

Imagine that you were living in a country, where all people were eating live frogs for breakfast. Suppose that this was their custom and if someone failed to do it, they would throw him to sink into the river with big hungry crocodiles. So, you either eat that frog or crocodiles eat you!

What would YOU do? Will you look at this frog every morning for hours and think how disgusting it is:or may be join the crocodiles? Well, my suggestion would be to eat that frog fast and forget about it!

No matter what you think or feel about your homework, you should treat it the same way or it will spoil all your college years ahead, and in your worst nightmares you’ll see how your professors are turning into hungry crocodiles and start eating you for absence of your homework.

To make this job easier for you, I’ve come up with 5 heavy reasons why it’s easier to do your homework than not do it:

#1. It takes longer to think of a good excuse (or bad excuse, e.g. ” The dog ate it.” or ” I left it on a bus”) than actually do the homework.

Just weigh how much time you’ll waste on making up a strong excuse. I should tell you from my own experience that it is a time- and energy-consuming task to make your teacher believe another story you made up.

Moreover, just imagine that someone else could use this brilliant excuse before and your teacher will figure out that.

One more important point is that if you are not in drama class, you’ll probably fail telling your excuses, because it’s always obvious when people lie.

#2. You can make your friend pay to copy it in the morning and you’ll be rich before you leave the university

#3. It will make your teachers happy if you do your homework and it’s a great feeling when you get your teacher’s recognition for a good job, especially if he or she is one of the toughest.

#4. If you did your homework conscientiously, there are good chances you’ll get a top grade and raise your GPA score.

#5. You can learn something valuable while doing your homework and it can always come in hand many years later.

As it comes out:the devil is not as terrible as he is painted. To tell you the truth, homework can be even fun – it all depends on your attitude!

Either way, treat your homework as a frog and you’ll learn how to handle any work – regardless of whether or not you like it!

To commence something new is difficult from one side, but very exciting and interesting from the other. You never know what to wait and get ready for, though the feeling of unexpectedness makes new undertakings unusually thrilling and fabulous.

By starting your freshman year at college you are turning over a new leaf in your life, opening a door to the world with a spate of opportunities. The feeling of agitation, anticipation and joy you experience on the threshold of college education are incomparable and unforgettable sensations, which retain with you for a long time and usually turn into vivid recollections. After all, student life is one of the most notable and impetuous periods in people’s life.

How will your freshman year look like?

Always remember that your first year of studying at college is a challenge you have to confront and respond to it with dignity, as all the decisions and actions you will make will have a great impact on the rest of your college education. Don’t expect anyone to stand back, remember that a law of jungle rules here, so that you have to survive and find ways how to thrive in your studying.

Your freshman year will be a hard nut to crack, because you will have to adapt to the new surroundings, to get familiar with a new place to live in, to find a rapport with your roommates, to work hard on your studying. Nevertheless the biggest challenge you will have to encounter is to win a position of prestige. It means that you will have to make a good showing before your tutors.

What does it mean to hook your professor?

It can seem a trifling thing, which you actually don’t want to treat seriously. Though, I don’t recommend you to neglect it, because producing a good impression on your tutor and winning of the favorable attitude are not peanuts. Literally it means to hook your professors by establishing a rapport with them.

I don’t summon you to become a favorite student of your professors by all possible means. Quite the opposite. I intend to reveal you the ways how to find an appropriate appeal to your tutors and enlist their support and understanding. After all, it can prove useful to you when you run into some snags.

Bear in mind, that many professors you have your freshman year will give you lectures and conduct seminars in your group again and it will help you a lot if they recognize you as a good student.

How can you find those pegs which will hook your professors? What is this code with rigorous rules and principles which every freshman has to be consistent with to hook his professors?

A secret code which guarantees you a favor of your professors

Rule 1.1 Attend lectures regularly and try to occupy the places in the first rows. It is a great strategy to stick in memory of your professors and pass face control at the exams. According to the monitoring of Andy Tucker, a professor of Durham University, students, who attended less than 30% of lectures invariably failed their exams and dropped out. At the same time, ALL of the students who gained a first in their final degree classification had attendance rates of 90% or more. And a student who attends 85% of lectures is statistically going to gain marks that are 10% higher than somebody who attends only 50% of lectures.

Rule 1.2 Be all ears during the lectures. Show your professor that you are genuinely interested in his subject and that his lecture is the only thing that matters for you now. Your intellectual curiosity and thirst for knowledge should be evident to your professors.

Rule 1.3 Always follow the thread of your professor’s thoughts in the course of the lecture and ask to the point questions. Though, never interrupt your lecturer even with the wittiest and most appropriate questions, because it provokes dissatisfaction of your tutor. Moreover, that he loses the train of his thoughts, he remembers you as an upstart rather than a forward student.

Rule 1.4 Be active during the seminars. Give your original views and perspectives on the problem, come out with interesting suggestions, show your thorough work with primary sources, feature and analyze the positions of scholars. In a word, a seminar is a great chance for you to show your competence in different fields.

Rule 1.5 Be versed in your course requirements and due dates. Your professors should understand that you are organized and responsible person, who can be always relied on. Take advantage of office hours professors schedule for the purpose of meeting with their students. Turn to your professors with all academic issues and ask for help when you need it.

Rule 1.6 Deliver all your written assignments before the deadline and always be prepared for your classes. Show an example of persistence and diligence.

Rule 1.7 Be involved, join Athletics, UIL, Clubs or Student Government. Take initiation and it will be paid off generously by helping you build up your reputation. Remember that involved student is a successful student.

Be sure to follow this code strictly and see how easily and effortlessly you will win a favor of your tutors.

Money is always not enough; it is practically a law of the universe! Learn how to multiply you student income and get out of the money problem once and all the time!

Money is something that is difficult to get, but easy to get rid of. However, if you are smart about handling your money, you can get through college or university paying less and making more.

While studying, the main source of income for you is your scholarship and some sum of money from your parents for your minor expenses. However, we all know that this is not enough to survive. The most realistic and easy way to earn some extra money is to get a grant or find a part time job.

Your college or university can you grants based on your academic performance. To get good grades is an easy way to get tidy sum of money at the end of the semester. However, to earn money in such a way takes time, persistence and a lot of efforts. Grants range from $1,200 for an A+ to 300 for a C-. Not bad really.

Besides, this way of getting money has a lot of pros. You not only get money, but heaps of knowledge in addition. Bear in mind rather hackneyed saying “Knowledge is power”. Knowledge will never be a heavy burden to you and probably some day you’ll take lots of benefits from it.

Another efficient, commonly utilized way of earning money is finding a part-time job. Many students took an advantage of earning money this way. Really, it has a lot of merits.

You gain financial independence, so you can command your finances in the way you like and relieve your parents from the financial burdens.

It helps you apply your knowledge in practice, realize yourself and feel more confident and mature.

It is a great experience for your future job. It helps you understand the real value of money and gives you the insight into what the work is about.

You penetrate into the adults’ world and foster a sense of competition.

It makes your life more colorful and is good for your personal development.

You get acquainted with new interesting people and study from them.

You get a roll of hard-earned money and can be proud of yourself.

Be prepared that you won’t find a job immediately. The employers aren’t waiting specially for you with arms wide open. Remember that the market is full of people searching for a job. And one more point is that you shouldn’t expect to get high salary at once. Though it is just a temporary place to work where you get some extra money.

For a start, the below listed jobs is the thing you might start with, as you don’t have to possess any special skills and they can become a good beginning for your upcoming job.

Wash car

Pet sitting

Recycle soft drink cans

Baby sitting

Mow lawn

Weed garden

Garage sale

Here is the list of more sophisticated jobs which can be of interest to you:

Barista

Bartender

Cafeteria Worker

Tutor >

Personal Trainer

Treat your job seriously, but don’t let it absorb all your time and strengths, as your studying is prior to your job at the moment. Make it well that in future you won’t get worthy, high-paid job without profound higher education.

The tip I can give you is to estimate realistically your strengths and time. If it comes out that something is odd, quit your job easily and don’t regret about it. However, if you are already working and making your living, not just pocket money, here are some useful tips and hints to help you save your hard-earned bucks:

Always look for sales and shop only at discount stores. Discipline yourself to buy everything, even small drib – drabs there. Remember to clip coupons and shop on double – coupon days.

Get rid of the habit to eat out too often. It will not only save you money, but also your health, as snack bars mainly serve junk food. So, cook for yourself as much as possible.

Go to matinees instead of evening shows and patronize movie theaters that offer students discounts.

Share an apartment or a house with your friends. After all it is just more fun to share your flat with someone else. The “cheapest” decision is to choose living in the dorm.

Try to live without a car if you can. Start leading the healthy way of life. Ride a bike. Anyway it is an excellent way to get your body exercised.

Buy monthly passes for whatever public transit you ride.

Join a credit union. Credit unions frequently offer low – interest loans.

When you want to buy something expensive, always ask yourself: “DO I REALLY NEED IT”?

Learn a saving experience from other people.

Repeat to yourself every morning: “I love money”. Maybe they’ll hear it and come to your hands. Be careful with it. Don’t be too zealous. Beware of mass attacks

Hope that these tips will help you make and save some money while you are in college. Good luck!
